This is a fascinating subject for a book. And it's a wonderful cover photograph - I wonder where it came from? I have visited some caravanserai in Syria and theyre so atmospheric.

I've been looking at the new Medieval and Renaissance galleries at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and they show just how important the silk road was as a means of opening up not just the passage of goods but of ideas.

By the way thanks for your emailed comments on my blog. I'm glad you are interested in Lewis Carroll and hope your husband is too. I enjoy reading your blog.
